What is a core?

Cores are auto parts or components of parts designed to be returned to the manufacturer after they've been used so they can be remanufactured and resold or recycled for their materials. The manufacturer then thoroughly cleans and inspects the used core, and any worn or damaged components of the part are replaced so that the core part can be resold and function like new. This process is designed to lower the cost of auto parts and related repairs and keep potentially hazardous parts from ending up in landfills.

Common core parts include batteries, water pumps, alternators, brake master cylinders, air conditioning compressors, brake shoes and starters.

What is a core charge?

When you purchase a core part, you will be charged the price of the part itself as well as an additional core charge (sometimes called a core price) that serves as a deposit to encourage you to return the core when the time comes to replace it. When you return the old, used core part and purchase a new one, you will not have to pay the core charge, saving you money on the replacement part. If you don't have a used core part with you to return when purchasing a new one, you will have to pay the core charge. However, if you return the used core part within a set time period, the core charge will be refunded.

The cost of a core charge is determined by the manufacturer and is based on the value of the materials used in the part as well as the ability to reuse the old core. Core charges may be applied to new parts as well as remanufactured parts because the materials and the core part have value to the manufacturer regardless of whether the part is new or remanufactured.

Example scenario

As an example, let's say you buy a new brake shoe for $200. This price includes the cost of the brake shoe as well as a $20 core charge. When the brake shoe eventually wears out, you bring the used brake shoe with you when you go to purchase a new one. You won't have to pay the core charge so instead of paying $200, the cost of the new brake shoe is reduced to $180.

If you haven't yet removed the brake shoe from your truck when you purchase the new one, you will be charged the full $200. After you've replaced the brake shoe, you can bring the old one back to the store with your receipt and credit card used to make the purchase and the $20 core charge will be refunded.
